Wayzata Allows One Hit, Loses Baseball Opener
Eagan pushes across a lone run in the sixth inning to spoil Voelker's no-hitter, defeat visiting Trojans.
It just wasn't meant to be for the Wayzata baseball team, as host Eagan made their lone hit in Thursday's showdown count to defeat the Trojans 1-0 Thursday afternoon in what was Wayzata's season opener.
Pitcher Paul Voelker struck out nine batters and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, yet the Trojans managed just two hits offensively and made three errors to help the Wildcats to their third win in five games.
Wayzata's bats were cooled by windchills hovering near freezing, and steady gusts blowing across the field made for an all around bitter day for Wayzata players and fans alike.

The Trojans best chance at a run came in the top of the sixth inning as Mickey Leius attempted to score on Voelker's blistering grounder that found its way through the infield and into the damp outfield grass. However, Leius was gunned down at home plate on a tag play and the threat was extinguished.
Within minutes, Eagan was crossing the plate with its own game-winning tally that decided matters in a game that lasted just over one hour.
