Sports Roundup: Wayzata Girls Soccer Seizes Control Of Lake Conference

Home wins over Edina, Minnetonka, give top-ranked Trojans a commanding lead within their circuit.

There were two more signature victories for the undefeated Wayzata girls soccer team to close out last week as the Trojans seized control of the Lake Conference title race after successfully defending their home turf.

Wayzata Girls Soccer

The Wayzata girls soccer team—ranked first in Class AA—rolled through a pair of top-10-ranked Lake Conference opponents to close out last week, defeating No. 2 Edina 3-1 on Thursday and No. 10 Minnetonka 2-1 on Saturday to improve to 9-0-1.

The Trojans took a commanding lead in the Lake standings, entering the week at 2-0-1 against conference foes; Eden Prairie was 1-0-3 in the circuit as of Monday night.

Kylie Schwarz leads Wayzata with four goals, with Kiana Nickel's four assists also pacing the squad. Goalkeepers Mara Dougherty and Delane Swanson have both been effective in net, claiming three and two shutouts, respectively, thus far.

Wayzata Boys Soccer

After a 1-0 loss to No. 2-ranked Edina last Thursday, the Wayzazta boys soccer team defeated Woodbury 2-1 last Saturday to enter this week with a 4-4-1 record. Individual statistics were not made available.

Wayzata Volleyball

The Wayzata volleyball team—ranked fifth in Class AAA—swept Edina 3-0 last Thursday to improve to 8-3 this year. Individual statistics were not made available.

Sophie Babo leads the Spartans with 15 goals and eight assists, with goalkeeper Abigail Personius posting 49 saves on 58 shots and two shutouts in eight games played.

Orono Boys Soccer

A pair of 2-1 wins over Glencoe-Silver Lake and Fridley last Thursday and Saturday, respectively, combined with a 1-1 tie against St. Cloud Cathedral on Monday to give the Orono boys soccer team a 4-4-1 record on the year.

Ben Engler leads the Spartans with four goals, followed by Willi Semsch with three scores this season.

Orono Volleyball

A 3-1 loss at Dassel-Cokato last Thursday dropped the Orono volleyball team to 5-4 this autumn. Individual statistics were not made available.

Orono Girls Tennis

After losing 47-6 and 20-0 in its initial two games, the Mound Westonka football team tripled its season total in scoring but still fell 40-18 at Delano—the No. 7-ranked team in Class AAAA—to close out last week.
