Sports Roundup: Wayzata Girls, Boys Join Orono Girls as Conference Soccer Champions

Trojans boys surge to championship with win, Edina loss on Thursday.

The regular season came to a close for the soccer teams from Wayzata, Mound Westonka and Orono on Thursday. The Trojans boys' and girls' teams and the Orono girls' squad claimed conference championships as all six sides now prepare for the post-season.

Wayzata Boys' Soccer

Two days after winning 2-1 in overtime at Edina to tie the Hornets atop the Lake Conference, the Wayzata boys' soccer squad made the championship all its own with a 5-0 victory over visiting Hopkins on Thursday as Edina lost 2-1 at Minnetonka.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Trojans concluded the regular season with an 11-4-1 overall record and a 6-2 Lake Conference mark that was one game better than No. 4-ranked Edina.

Next up for Wayzata is the Section 6AA playoffs, with a likely first-round home game against a yet-to-be determined opponent on Oct. 13.

Wayzata Girls' Soccer

A 1-0 win over Hopkins clinched the Lake Conference title for the sixth-ranked Wayzata girls as the Trojans finished with a 12-2-2 overall record and a 4-2-2 conference mark that was one-half game better than Minnetonka in the final standings.

Individual statistics from the game were not made available. Heading into Thursday, Kylie Schwartz and Maddie Eklin were tied for the team-scoring lead with six goals apiece.

Next up for Wayzata is the Section 6AA playoffs, with a likely first-round home game against a yet-to-be determined opponent on Oct. 13.

Orono Girls' Soccer

The Wright County Conference champion Orono girls' soccer team closed out its regular season with a 5-1 defeat of Rockford on Thursday to give the team an 11-4-1 overall record heading into the playoffs.

The Spartans, ranked seventh in Class A, claimed a 6-1 record in the Wright County Conference this autumn and were led by Sophie Babo's 26 goals in the regular season.

Next up for Orono is the Section 6A Tournament, scheduled to run from Oct. 10-18. Opponents and seedings have not yet been determined.

Orono Boys' Soccer

A 3-2 loss to Holy Family Catholic in Waconia dropped the Orono boys' soccer team to 8-6-2 on the season.

The Spartans finished fourth in the Wright County standings with a 4-2-1 conference record. Willi Semsch led the Spartans with eight goals, with Ben Engler netting six goals. 

Next up for Orono is the Section 6A Tournament, scheduled to run from Oct. 10-18. Opponents and seedings have not yet been determined.

Mound Westonka Girls' Soccer

A 3-2 win at Hutchinson on Thursday gave the Mound Westonka girls' soccer team a .500 record as it heads to the playoffs.

The White Hawks finished with two wins in a row to improve to 7-7-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the final conference tally. Individual statistics were not made available.

Next up for Mound Westonka is the Section 6A Tournament, scheduled to run from Oct. 10-18. Opponents and seedings have not yet been determined.

Mound Westonka Boys' Soccer

A 2-0 win at Hutchinson on Thursday gave the Mound Westonka a 10-4-2 overall record and a 6-2-2 conference mark, good for second place in the Wright County.

Individual statistics were not made available. Next up for Mound Westonka is the Section 6A Tournament, scheduled to run from Oct. 10-18. Opponents and seedings have not yet been determined.

Wayzata Volleyball

The No. 7-ranked Wayzata volleyball team topped Hopkins in three games (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) on Thursday to improve to 14-7 overall and 5-1 in the Lake Conference. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Orono Volleyball

The Orono volleyball team topped Glencoe-Silver Lake in four games (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22) on Thursday to improve to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Mound Westonka Volleyball

The Mound Westonka volleyball team lost in three games (18-25, 17-25, 21-25) to Delano on Thursday to fall to 17-7-1 on the year. 

Brenna Mack led the White Hawks with 12 digs, 11 kills and five aces. Mound Westonka fell to 3-3 in the Wright County with the defeat.

Orono Girls' Tennis

The Orono girls' tennis team was eliminated in the opening round of the Section 2AA Tournament, as the fifth-seeded Spartans lost 5-2 at No. 4-ranked Delano on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Mound Westonka Girls' Tennis

The Mound Westonka girls' tennis team was eliminated in the opening round of the Section 2AA Tournament, as the eighth-seeded White Hawks lost 7-0 at No. 1-ranked Minnetonka on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.
