Sports Roundup: Spring Season In Full Swing

Wayzata, Orono and Mound-Westonka squads have taken to the field and begun their 2011 seasons.

While winter still seems to have a bit of a hold on the state, local teams battled through the weather conditions this week.

Mound-Westonka Softball: Whitehawks Start Spring at 3-0

The Mound-Westonka girl's softball team has begun the season with three straight victories and have given up just two goals combined in wins against Litchfield, Anandale and Orono.

Pitcher Kim Hutchins has yet to give up a run in starting 2-0 with 23 strikeouts to one walk, while Brooklyn Pouti has seven runs batted in and a team-high .700 batting average.

The Whitehawks host Wright County Conference rival Hutchinson at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Mound-Westonka Baseball: Whitehawks On Three-Game Win Streak

After losing its first two games to start the year, the Mound-Westonka baseball team has won three in a row with triumphs over Orono, Waconia and Glencoe-Silver Lake and currently sits in fourth place in the conference.

Patrick Regan is 1-1 in his pitching appearances with a 1.91 earned run average, 12 strikeouts and three walks. Matt Pearson leads the team with a .667 batting average.

The Whitehawks are scheduled to host Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., with a trip to Hutchinson slated for Thursday.

Orono Softball: Spartans Split First Four Games

The Orono softball team has started the year 2-2, with two straight wins against Waconia and Annandale following a pair of losses to Mound-Westonka and Annandale.

Individual statistics were not available. The Spartans travel to Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday and Glencoe-Silver Lake on Thursday.

Wayzata Softball: Trojans Earn First Victory

After two losses to Hopkins and Eagan to begin the year, the Wayzata softball team defeated Edina by a 2-0 score on Monday to improve to 1-2 on the year.

Kelsey Kleist has one home run on the season for the Trojans, with Jessica Williams pitching a complete game four-hit shutout for the victory against the Hornets.

Wayzata travels to Lake Conference foe Eden Prairie for a 4:15 p.m. start on Wednesday, with a home game against Bloomington Kennedy scheduled 24 hours later.

Orono Baseball: Spartans Win One Of First Three Games

The Orono baseball team sandwiched a 9-8 win over Annandale on April 14 with losses to Mound-Westonka and Waconia last week.

Individual statistics were not available. The Spartans are scheduled to host Watertown-Mayer at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Glencoe-Silver Lake at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Wayzata Baseball: Trojans Still Seeking First Win

After going 0-3 last week, the Wayzata baseball team is still seeking its first victory of the season as it prepares to host Edina and Bloomington Kennedy at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The Trojans are losing by narrow margins, falling to Eagan, Grand Rapids and Eden Prairie by five runs combined. Individual statistics were not available.

Orono Girls Lacrosse: Spartans Eke Out Two Victories

With an 8-6 win at Totino-Grace and an 8-7 home defeat of Mound-Westonka, the Orono girls lacrosse team opened the spring with a 2-0 record heading into a pair of games this week.

Catherine Fraser leads the Spartans with six goals, with Shea Noerenberg tallying three goals in the first week.

Orono hosts St. Cloud on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., before a road game at St. Louis Park on Thursday night.

Wayzata Boys Lacrosse: Trojans Split Opening Pair

The Wayzata boys lacrosse team heads into its lone remaining game of this week, a Thursday night home game versus Minnetonka at 7:30 p.m., with a 1-1 record following a 14-7 win versus Eastview to open the year and a 14-8 loss at Eden Prairie on Monday night.

Jameson MacGregor leads the Trojans with six goals, with Andrew Fairbairn and Eric Fong recording three tallies apiece. 

Wayzata Girls Lacrosse: Trojans Start Out At 0-3

An 18-9 loss to Lake rival Eden Prairie on Monday night dropped the Wayzata girls lacrosse team to 0-3 on the season after defeats against Lakeville North and Blake last week.

Mackenzie Shannon, Taylor Kramer and Kaitlyn Worde are all tied for the Trojans' scoring lead with four goals apiece.

Wayzata hosts Minnetonka on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Mound-Westonka Girls Lacrosse: Whitehawks Topped In Opener

The Mound-Westonka was nipped by Orono, 8-7, in its season opener on April 15.

Kayla Schultz leads the Whitehawks with four points, with the team slated to host Holy Family Catholic in its lone game of this week at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Orono Golf: Boys Win, Girls Third In Conference Matches

Matt Peterson shot a par score of 36 over nine holes to lead the Orono boys golf team to a winning team score of 151 in a Wright County Conference meet at Crow River Golf Course on Monday.

The Spartans girls took third in their conference meet with a team score of 188 at Southbrook Golf Course in Annandale. Individual results were not available.

Wayzata Girls Golf: Trojans Win Lake Dual

The Wayzata girls golf team defeated Hopkins, 161-191 in a Lake Conference dual meet at the Wayzata Country Club on Monday. The Trojans' Taylor Fontaine was the individual medalist with a par score of 36 over nine holes.

Mound-Westonka Golf: Boys Seventh, Girls 10th In Conference Meet

The Mound-Westonka boys golf team carded a 177 and the girls a 247 to finish seventh and 10th, respectively, in their Wright County Conference matches on Monday. 

Individual results were not available; the boys competed at the Crow River Golf Course in Hutchinson, the girls at Southbrook Golf Course in Annandale.

Wayzata Boys Tennis: Trojans 3-0 In Minnesota

The Wayzata boys tennis team defeated St. Louis Park (7-0) and Coon Rapids (4-3) last week before suffering a 5-2 loss to O'Gorman High School from Sioux Falls, S. Dak. on April 16.

Individual results were not available. The Trojans were able to bounce back and remain undefeated against teams from Minnesota with a 6-1 defeat of Eden Prairie on Monday.

Mound-Westonka Boys Tennis: Whitehawks Remain Undefeated

The Mound-Westonka boys tennis team opened the season with a 3-0 record after a 4-3 defeat of Shakopee and 5-2 wins against Providence Academy and Buffalo.

Individual results were not available. The Whitehawks are scheduled to take on Orono on Tuesday and Hutchinson on Thursday.

Orono Boys Tennis: Spartans Defeat Burnsville, Buffalo 

The Orono boys tennis team has claimed wins of 4-3 versus Burnsville and 6-1 against Buffalo heading into a scheduled match against Mound-Westonka on Tuesday. Individual results were not available.

Results were not available for the Wayzata, Mound-Westonka and Orono track/field teams.
