Sports Roundup: Orono Soccer Claims Two Sectional Shutouts

Spartans blank International School, Watertown-Mayer in playoff openers; Mound Westonka girls soccer eliminated from postseason.

The postseason began happily for three of four Lake Minnetonka-area soccer teams on Tuesday as Orono swept its pair of opponents without giving up a goal while one Mound Westonka squad saw its season come to a close.

Orono Boys Soccer

The fourth-seeded Orono boys soccer team allowed No. 13 seed International School just one shot in a 4-0 victory to open the Section 6A Tournament. Willi Semsch logged three assists as Matthew Heussner, Will Fraser, Ian McNamara and Alec Prueter all scored for the Spartans.

Orono will host No. 5 seed Mound Westonka at 5 p.m. Thursday in the sectional quarterfinals.

Orono Girls Soccer

Sophie Babo scored four goals as the second-seeded Orono girls soccer team thumped No. 15 seed Watertown-Mayer 9-0 in the Section 6A opener.

Amie Tunheim scored twice, with Nikki Smith, Miranda Mosher and Katie Larson all adding a goal each; goalkeeper Becky Smith made nine saves for the shutout victory.

The Spartans host No. 7 Chaska at 7 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Mound Westonka Boys Soccer

The fifth-ranked Mound Westonka boys soccer team defeated No. 12 Rockford 4-1 in its Section 6A opener.

Individual statistics were not made available. The White Hawks will play at No. 4 Orono at 5 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

Mound Westonka Girls Soccer

A 4-3 loss to ninth-seeded Delano ended the No. 8 Mound Westonka girls soccer team's season in the first round of Section 6A play.

Individual statistics were not made available. The White Hawks concluded 2011 with a 7-8-2 record.

Orono Volleyball

A 3-2 defeat of Litchfield improved the Orono volleyball team to 13-8 overall and 3-4 in the Wright County Conference.

Mariah Scharf led the Spartans with 22 kills and 14 digs; Rachel Heussner's 23 assists also topped the squad.

Orono plays in the Centennial Tournament on Saturday, then ends the regular season versus visiting Hutchinson at 7 p.m. next Monday.

Mound Westonka Volleyball

The Mound Westonka volleyball team improved to 18-7-1 overall and 4-3 in Wright County play with a 3-2 defeat of Glencoe-Silver Lake on Tuesday.

Brenna Mack led the White Hawks with 39 kills and 41 digs, with Callie Mack's 59 assists topping the team.

Mound Westonka closes out the regular season versus visiting Annandale at 7 p.m. next Monday.
