Sports Roundup: Mound Westonka Football Claims First Win Of Season

White Hawks thump host Patrick Henry, Orono football team falls at Hutchinson.

Mound Westonka claimed its first football win of the season, while Orono lost a Wright County Conference battle on Sept. 30, as local tennis teams entered the post-season with the calendar turning to October.

Mound Westonka Football

The Mound Westonka football team rolled to its first victory of the season, scoring the first five touchdowns before the hosts spoiled the shutout in the White Hawks 35-8 non-conference victory at Minneapolis Patrick Henry.

David Bingham and Riley Williams scored two touchdowns each, with Zach Holloway adding one more score on a fumble return as Mound Westonka improved to 1-4 on the season as it prepares to host Annandale this Friday.

Orono Football

A 34-20 loss at Hutchinson dropped the Orono football team to 1-4 this season as the Spartans prepare to host non-conference Grand Rapids this coming Friday.

Orono mustered three touchdown runs in its loss to the Tigers, as Grant Schoen, Koller Adzick and Tom Wachman all crossed into the end zone for the visitors.

Girls Tennis

The Orono and Mound Westonka girls' tennis teams begin play in the North bracket of the Section 2AA Tournament on Tuesday.

Orono, with the fifth seed, opens the playoffs at No. 4 Delano. Eighth-seeded Mound Westonka commences the post-season at No. 1 Minnetonka. If both teams pull off the upset, they would play each other at Orono at 3:45 pm on Thursday.

Wayzata claimed the No. 2 seed in its Section 6AA Tournament and will begin their playoffs against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Oct. 10.

Mound Westonka Soccer

The Mound Westonka girls' soccer team is 5-7-2 overall, after a 3-0 loss to Chaska on Oct. 1. With two conference games remaining, the White Hawks are 3-3-1 in the Wright County standings.

Following a 1-0 loss to Chaska, the Mound Westonka boys' soccer team is 9-3-2 overall, and takes a 5-1-2 Wright County record into its final two regular-season games this week.

Orono Soccer

With a 1-0 defeat of Holy Angels on Oct. 1, in a game matching up the Nos. 5 and 7-ranked teams in Class A, the Orono girls' soccer team improved to 10-4-1 overall as the Wright County champions close out the regular season with a non-conference game versus Rockford after posting a 6-1 circuit mark this autumn.

With an 8-5-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 conference mark, the Orono boys' soccer team prepares to close out its regular season at Holy Family Catholic on Oct. 6. The Spartans topped Breck 2-1 on Oct. 1, but lost to Rochester Lourdes 1-0 on Monday.

Wayzata Boys Soccer

The Wayzata boys' soccer team defeated Robbinsdale Armstrong by a 5-1 score on Oct. 1, and enter their final two-game regular-season stretch at 9-4-1 overall.

The Trojans hold a 4-2 Lake Conference record heading into a Tuesday night game at circuit leader Edina before closing out the pre-playoff schedule at Hopkins on Thursday night.

Mound Westonka Volleyball

An unblemished run on Oct. 1 earned the Mound Westonka volleyball team a first-place finish in the Virginia Tournament and upped the White Hawks' record to 16-6-1 overall heading into a Tuesday night match against Orono.

Orono Volleyball

The Orono volleyball team took third place at the Delano Tournament on Oct. 1, winning three matches and losing one to bring its record to 10-8 heading into a Tuesday night match with Mound Westonka.

Wayzata Volleyball

A five-game match loss to No. 2-ranked Lakeville North on Oct. 1 dropped the seventh-ranked Wayzata volleyball team to 12-7 for the season. The Trojans are at Lake Conference rival Edina on Tuesday night.
