Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Season Begins For Local Squads

Several teams from Orono, Wayzata and Mound Westonka commence their 2011 campaigns.

A number of teams from Wayzata, Orono and Mound Westonka high schools began their fall sports season last week, with more set to start this week.

Wayzata Girls Tennis

The Wayzata girls tennis team rolled through its first week of the season, claiming a 6-1 win at Eagan last Wednesday, a 7-0 win versus Benilde-St. Margaret's on Thursday and a first-place finish at the Red Wing Tournament on Saturday to go with a 5-2 defeat of Lakeville South on Monday.

Tabulated results were not available. The Trojans host Providence Academy on Tuesday and Shakopee on Thursday, with both matches slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Wayzata Girls Soccer

With wins in its first two matches of the season last week, the Wayzata girls soccer team got off to a good start as it prepares for a pair of home games this week.

The Trojans won 2-1 at Minneapolis South last Thursday and followed that up with a 3-0 home victory against Minneapolis Southwest on Saturday.

Kylie Schwartz leads Wayzata with two goals and an assist, with Kiana Nickel, Summer Johnson and Isabelle Anderson each logging a goal each over the first two games.

The Trojans host Elk River at 5 p.m. Thursday and play Duluth East at noon on Saturday.

Wayzata Boys Soccer

The Wayzata boys soccer team went without an official win at the Stillwater Tournament last week, falling 3-1 to the hosts on Thursday before tying Spring Lake Park, 0-0, on Saturday.

Individual statistics were not available. The Trojans host Elk River at 7 p.m. Thursday and Minneapolis South at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Orono Boys Soccer

Will Fraser's goal was not enough to earn Orono a victory in the season opener last Thursday as the Spartans fell to Maple Grove by a score of 3-1.

Orono hosts a four-team tournament beginning on Tuesady afternoon as St. Louis Park, St. Michael-Albertville and Holy Family Catholic pay a visit to the northwest metro.

Orono Girls Soccer

The Orono girls soccer team overwhelmed visiting Providence Academy, winning the season opener 7-0 last Thursday.

Sophie Babo had a four-point day against Providence with two goals and two assists, with Nikki Smith, Hannah Deters, Emily Knight, Madison Martini and Amie Tunheim all getting in on the goal-scoring act.

The Spartans also host a four-team tournament that begins on Tuesday.

Mound Westonka Boys Soccer

The Mound Westonka boys soccer team began its season with a 3-0 defeat of PACT Charter last Thursday. 

Individual statistics were not available. The White Hawks host Southwest Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in their lone game of this week.

Mound Westonka Girls Soccer

The Mound Westonka girls soccer team split its first two games of the autumn, playing in the Irondale Tournament last week.

After defeating their hosts 1-0 on Friday, the White Hawks lost 5-0 to Woodbury's East Ridge on Saturday to enter this week at 1-1.

Mound Westonka plays at Southwest Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Results were not made available for last week's matches involving the Mound Westonka and Orono girls tennis teams.
