Sports Roundup: Cross Country Conference, Soccer Sectional Contests

Lake Minnetonka-area teams compete on the trails and on the pitch in crucial matchups.

Cross-County conference meets and Soccer sectional matchups dominated the local athletic calendar on Thursday as squads from Wayzata, Orono and Mound Westonka competed on the trails and on the pitch.

Wayzata Cross-Country

The Wayzata girls and boys cross-country teams both finished second in their respective competitions at the Lake Conference Championship Meet at Gale Woods Farm on Thursday.

Anna French won the girls individual conference title with a time of 14 minutes, 57 seconds over 4,000 meters, while Josh Thorson won the boys individual Lake title with a time of 15:47.5 over 5,000 meters.

Wayzata Soccer

It was a victorious Thursday for both Wayzata girls and boys soccer teams, seeded No. 1 and 2, respectively, in their Section 6AA Tournament brackets.

The Trojans girls squad blanked No. 8 seed Robbinsdale Cooper 8-0 in its playoff opener and advance into a sectional semifinal at home against No. 4 St. Louis Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The boys shut out No. 7 seed Robbinsdale Armstrong 4-0 and will now host defending sectional champion and third-seeded Minneapolis Southwest at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Orono vs. Mound Westonka Boys Soccer

Goals from Willi Semsch and Alec Prueter combined with three saves from goalkeeper Sean Boyle to spell a 2-0 win for Osseo over Mound Westonka in the Section 6A boys soccer playoff semifinals on Thursday.

Fourth-seeded Orono advances to play at No. 1 seed Benilde-St. Margaret's at 5 p.m. Saturday. Fifth-seeded Mound Westonka's season came to an end with a 11-4-2 record.

Orono Girls Soccer

The Orono girls soccer team, seeded second in the Section 6A Tournament, advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 7 seed Chaska on Thursday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Spartans host No. 3 seed Holy Family Catholic at noon on Saturday.

Mound Westonka, Orono Cross Country

The Mound Westonka and Orono boys and girls cross country teams ran in the Wright County Conference Championship Meet on Thursday at Litchfield Golf Course.

The Spartans boys won the conference title with 41 points, with the White Hawks boys taking second with 55 points.

On the girls side, Orono took fifth with 131 points as Mound Westonka was eighth with 184 points.
