Sports Roundup: Busy Stretch For Local Teams

Wayzata, Mound Westonka and Orono athletic programs pack up the calendar through the weekend.

Making up for the Labor Day holiday, Lake Minnetonka-area sports teams packed the calendar late last week and through the weekend as squads from Wayzata, Mound Westonka and Orono delved into the heart of the autumn season.

Wayzata Girls Soccer

With a 6-0-1 record, the Wayzata girls soccer team rose to the No. 1 spot in the Class AA rankings on the heels of back-to-back defeats of Rogers on Sept. 7 and 10.

Maddie Schwartz leads the Trojans with three goals heading into this week, followed by Maddie Eklin and Summer Johnson with two goals apiece. The goalkeeping tandem of Mara Daugherty and Delane Swanson have four shutouts between them and have saved 19 of 22 shots on the Wayzata goal this autumn.

Wayzata Boys Soccer

The Wayzata boys soccer team shutout Minnetonka (4-0) and Prior Lake (1-0) on Sept. 8 and 10, respectively, to improve to 3-3-1 on the year. Individual statistics were not made available.

Wayzata Volleyball

With a win over Belle Plaine in the finale, the Wayzata volleyball team claimed third place in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge in Marshall on Sept. 10, going 4-1 in tourney play to improve to 6-2 overall.

Toni Okuyemi leads the Trojans with 158 kills, as Julia Doyle's 405 assists and Lauren Houg's 146 digs also pace the club.

Wayzata Girls Swimming and Diving

The Wayzata girls swimming and diving team topped Hopkins, 96-82, in a Lake Conference dual meet on Sept. 8. Individual statistics were not made available.

Wayzata Girls Tennis

The Wayzata girls tennis team finished in fourth place out of 18 teams in the Rochester Invitational on Sept. 10. Individual statistics were not made available.

Orono Girls Soccer

Back-to-back shutout losses to Waconia (1-0) and Benilde-St. Margaret's (3-0) on Sept. 8 and 12, respectively, dropped the Orono girls soccer team to 4-3 on the season.

Sophie Babo leads the Spartans with 11 goals heading into this week, followed my Nikki Smith with goals.

Orono Boys Soccer

The Orono boys soccer team lost 1-0 to visiting Waconia on Sept. 8 in its lone game last week to fall below .500 at 2-3 on the year. 

Will Fraser and Ben Engler share the Spartans' scoring lead with three goals apiece through five games.

Orono Volleyball

By defeating the hosts in the finale, the Orono volleyball team took fifth place at the Coon Rapids Invitational on Sept. 10 after going 3-1 in tournament play to improve to 5-2 ovearll on the season.

Mariah Scharf leads the Spartans with 59 kills, 34 digs and 40 service aces, as Bailey Armstrup's 87 assists and 10 blocks also top the club.

Orono Cross-Country

The Orono cross-country teams competed in the Ron Kretsch Invitational in Crystal on Sept. 10, with the boys finishing second and the girls taking seventh.

Brady Koeting led the Spartans boys with a fourth-place finish in 10 minutes, 34 seconds, followed by Paul Brauchle in 10:38.

Grace Leslie led the Spartans girls with a 31st-place finish in 9:38. 

Mound Westonka Boys Soccer

The Mound Westonka Boys soccer team improved to 5-0 with a 2-0 defeat of Providence Academy on Sept. 10 following a 6-0 win at Delano. The White Hawks have not given up a goal since the season opener on Aug. 25. Individual statistics were not made available.

Mound Westonka Volleyball

The Mound Westonka volleyball team hosted and won an invitational tournament on Sept. 10, defeating St. Anthony, Spring Lake Park, rockford and Mounds View to improve to 6-1 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Mound Westonka Girls Tennis

The Mound Westonka girls tennis team lost 5-2 to St. Michael-Albertville on Sept. 10. Individual statistics were not made available.
