Skating Club Completes 5,100 Laps for a $5,000 Figure

The Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club's first Skate-a-Thon raised funds for the Windjammer synchronized skating program.

The following is news from the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club:

Fifty-one skaters completed more than 5,100 laps to raise $5,000 for the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club’s (LMFSC) Windjammer synchronized skating program on Friday, Sept. 21.

Club figure skaters, ranging in age from six to 55 years old, gathered at the Minnetonka Ice Arena to participate in the club’s first-ever Skate-A-Thon fundraiser. Skaters included members of the club’s four synchronized skating teams as well as individual adult, youth and coach participants. The goal for each participant was to skate 100 laps during the one-hour event and raise a minimum of $25 for the Skate-A-Thon.

The 2012-2013 Windjammers synchronized skating teams are comprised of 53 girls, ranging from seven to 17 years of age, skating at the Pre-Juvenile, Juvenile, Open Juvenile and Intermediate team levels.

These teams will participate in up to nine competitions this season with several events taking place out of state. The first synchronized skating competition is Nov. 10 in St. Cloud. Synchronized skating team members reside in the western suburbs including Minnetonka, Hopkins, Wayzata, Plymouth, Orono, Chanhassen and Eden Prairie.

Synchronized skating is one of today’s fastest growing sports. It is a highly technical form of skating characterized by speed, precision, intricate formations, elaborate footwork and breathtaking transitions performed by teams of eight to 20 athletes. In the Midwest alone, more than 200 teams compete at levels ranging from beginner to collegiate.

The Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club (LMFSC) is a 501c3 non-profit organization and makes its home at the Minnetonka Ice Arena in Minnetonka. LMFSC is a member of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) and promotes individual testing and competitive skating, as well as sponsors programs for four competitive synchronized skating teams.
