Orono Boys Golf Ties For Third At State

The Spartans failed to win their fourth straight state championship, losing by four strokes to Detroit Lakes

The Orono boys golf team fell short of its fourth straight state championship on Thursday in the Class AA tournament, tying for third overall at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

The Spartans finished with a two-day total of 610, matching Staples Motley’s score, which was four strokes behind Detroit Lakes’ state championship 606 total.

A win would have made Orono the fourth team in history to win four straight titles, following Waconia in 1980, Bemidji in 1991 and Rochester Lourdes in 2003.
