Lake Minnetonka Boys Seize Swim and Dive Conference Title for Third Straight Year

The Orono Mound Westonka (OMW) co-op boys swim and dive earned the title of Wright County Conference Champs for the third year in a row, showing depth across all events.

For the third year, the Orono Mound Westonka (OMW) co-op boys swim and dive team earned the title of Wright County Conference Champs, showing depth across all events.

Competing in Hutchinson on Feb. 9 with the top-12 finishers scoring in each event, the team earned 396 points to second place Hutchinson at 323.5, Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield’s 308 and Waterown-MayerWaconiaDelano’s 307.5.

“This was a great meet,” said Mound Westonka High School senior captain Ryan Strother, who was sidelined due to an injury. “A lot of swimmers swam some of their best times which helped clinch a third conference victory."

The meet started with Hutchinson taking first and sixth place in in 200-yard medley relay to OMW’s third and fifth place finishes. Orono senior captain Spencer Cumming then won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.71) with Orono sophomore Ag Graham and Orono eighth-grader Alex Reyman also contributing at 6th and 9th place. 

In the 200-yard individual medley, all four OWM swimmers finished in the top-10 nudging OMW into first with 99 points to Hutch’s 88. Orono eighth-grader Andrew Kileen took 5th place (2:17.13), Orono freshman Chase Olsen (6th), Orono seventh-grader Pete Sherek (9th) and Orono eighth grade Sig Muller (10th). In the 50-yard free, MWHS seniors Damian Urwyler and senior captain Merv Moorhead turned in 23.53 and 23.61 to claim 5th and 7th place, but OMW slipped to second place behind Hutch.

The OMW dive squad showed their strength with all four divers placing. MWHS senior Tyler Jordahl finished his regular season undefeated scoring 384.65 to take first followed by MWHS junior Tanner Azeltine in second (351.5), Orono junior Beau Bordson in 4th (292.85) and Orono eighth-grader Alex Schrock in 8th (232.4).

In the 100-yard butterfly, Muller and MWHS senior Connor Anderson contributed at 8th and 9th place. Orono senior captain Mitchell Miller won the 100-yard free at 50.09, breaking the 50.85 record set last year by MWHS’s Cole Easley.

Also in the 100-free, MWHS seniors Blaze Vicknair and Nick Johnson finished 6th and 11th, respectively, with MWHS sophomore Miguel Octavio at 12th. After clinching four spots in the top-five in the 500-yard free, OMW was securely in first place by 55 points. Olsen took first with 5:23.63, Cumming second (5:24.53) Reyman fourth and Graham 5th.

The 200-free relay teams finished 4th and 7th and were followed by solid performances in the 100-yard backstroke—with Miller taking second (57.62) and Moorhead third (58.60). Orono eighth-grader William Brenton took 6th, and MWHS eighth-grader Alec Otteson finished 10th.

In the 100-yard breaststroke Urwyler dropped six seconds to 1:06.67, taking third with Anderson, Sherek and Kileen finishing at 6th, 7th and 8th.  With the lead going into the final event, OMW’s third-place and sixth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay wrapped up the championship title.

The Conference Championship win marks the end of the regular season. Next week the co-op team splits to compete in Class A Sections meet on Feb. 21 at Richfield, and  the two teams seperate into Orono and Mound Westonka.
