Orono Mound Westonka Boys Swim and Dive Improves to 2-0 in Conference

OMW turned in five first place finishes in swim events and clinched the top-three spots in diving.

With a decisive 107-79 win against Wright Conference rival Hutchinson on Jan. 10, the Orono Mound Westonka (OMW) co-op boys swim and dive team is 2-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall. OMW turned in five first place finishes in swim events and clinched the top three spots in diving.

“This was a good dual meet for us,” said Mound Westonka senior captain Ryan Strother. “Our training over winter break helped quite a bit and we are looking forward to competing as a team for the rest of season.”

The meet got underway with a touch-out by OMW’s 200-yard medley relay team with Mound Westonka’s senior captain Merv Moorhead, senior Damian Urwyler, Strother and Orono senior captain Miller to win with 1:45.18. Orono senior captain Spencer Cumming delivered a first in the 200-yard freestyle with 1:57.15. Strother took first in the 100-yard fly with 59.29—followed by Miller winning the 100-yard freestyle with 51.19.

Cumming and Orono freshman Chase Olsen paired up for the first two spots in the 500-yard freestyle. The dive squad seized the top three spots with MWHS senior Tyler Jordahl’s score of 226.80 followed by MWHS junior Tanner Azeltine (156.90) and Orono junior Beau Bordson (129.30).

OMW tallied five additional second place finishes, including the 200-yard free relay and the 400-yard free relay. Strother took second in the 50-yard free behind Hutchinson’s Cole Bateman who is also his Minnetonka Club teammate.

Miller also finished behind Bateman to take second in the 100-yard back. Moorhead took third. With his season best time, Urwyler took second in the 100-yard breastroke with 1:12.67—followed by Connor Anderson for third.

The team faces Buffalo on Jan. 17 at home and hosts the season’s final home meets on Jan. 22 and 24.
