Mound Westonka Wrestling Looks Strong in Season Opener

Tyler Hebig celebrated his 18th birthday with a third consecutive Fridley Invite title.

Mound Westonka's varsity wrestling team is off to a fast start with a runner-up finish at the Fridley Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tournament champion Tartan just edged out the White Hawks by a 189.5 to 183.5 score.

“Overall we wrestled really well and just about won it," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "We definitely have some things to work on, but I’m happy with how we started.”

Senior Tyler Hebig celebrated his 18th birthday with his third consecutive Fridley Invite title, and is a four-time finalist.

“Tyler was dominant and will miss this tournament when he graduates,” commented assistant coach Eric Rodelius.

Placing for the White Hawks were: Travis Peterson, 4th place; Drake Heath, 3rd place; Ryan Reid, John Byers, and Bryan Tierney, 2nd place; and champions Sam Bennyhoff, Ben Rogers, Ryder Schmidt and Hebig.

The White Hawks will travel to the tough Paul Bunyan Invite in Brainerd on Friday and Saturday. With several ranked teams in all three classes, it will be a tough test early on.

“I am excited to see how the guys respond," added assistant coach John Wardlow. "We will certainly know where we are at with a meat-grinder like the Bunyan.”

Really good to hear! Nice Job getting all three coaches qouted. Can't believe the coaching staff is still there after 12 years! Chuck Ham.
