Mound Westonka Softball Squad Peels Off Pair of Ws

White Hawks down Hutchinson and Dassal Cokato to up their record to 4-2.

Mound Westonka High School's varsity softball team is off to a 4-2 start to the 2012 season and has one two consecutive games.

The team takes on Delano tomorrow, April 26, and face Annandale on May 3. Below is a recent recap of the team's games provided by head coach Dan Krause.

April 24: Mound Westonka 8, Hutchinson 1

The White Hawks came out swinging yesterday to take a 4-0 lead after the first inning against the Tigers from Hutchinson. The first four batters each got on base and scored before an out was even recorded, and the Westonka attack was highlighted by a two RBI double by Emmi Christensen.

The White Hawks continued to be aggressive, leading to their best offensive performance of the season so far—scoring in almost every inning for a total of eight runs. After plating four runs in the first inning, Brooklyn Pouti added another run in the second inning with a solo homerun to left center to give Westonka a 5-0 lead.

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the third inning, Katie Rasmussen found a hole with an RBI single—giving the White Hawks a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. A leadoff solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning accounted for Hutch's lone run of the game. The White Hawks would respond with their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Lauren Kolden drawing a bases loaded walk and Emmi Christensen putting the ball in play to get the eighth and final run of the game.

Noteworthy stats:

  • Brooklyn Pouti, 2-for-3, three runs scored, one RBI, one HR, one stolen base
  • Emmi Christensen, 1-for-4, three RBI, one double and one run
  • Ellie Kalgren, KatieJo Delisle and Katie Rasmussen each had one hit
  • KatieJo earned the win, pitching four innings, one earned run, six hits and six strikeouts

April 20: Mound Westonka 4, Dassel Cokato 3

The Mound Westonka varsity softball team got back in the win column Friday with a hard fought victory over a tough Charger team from Dassel Cokato.

Both teams had good pitching and defense, and offensively both teams exchanged leads throughout the game. Dassel Cokato led 1-0 after the first inning thanks to a homerun, but Mound Westonka took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Emmi Christensen smacked a two RBI single with two outs.

Once again Dassel Cokato came back to tie the game 2-2, forcing a couple Whitehawk errors in the top of the fourth. The potent DC offense would add another homerun in the 6th inning to take a 3-2 lead, but it was all Westonka from then on.

Allie Brady drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, and Erin Rasmussen followed with a big RBI single with two outs to tie the game at three. With the bases loaded, two outs and a two strike count, Jenna Hoogeveen drove a ball through the middle of the infield to send the Whitehawks celebrating a walk off 4-3 win in a very exciting game.

  • Erin Rasmussen and Jenna Hoogeveen each had one hit and one RBI.
  • Ellie Kalgren, KatieJo Delisle and Katie Rasmussen each had one hit.
  • KatieJo earned the win, giving up two earned runs, five hits, 10 strikeouts, one walk and one hit by pitch.
