Westonka Girl's Hockey Team Hopes to Continue Strong Start

Undefeated Mound Westonka faces Red Wing in a key non-conference girl's hockey game Tuesday.

ON THE LINE
The game matches two teams ranked in the top ten in Class A with Mound Westonka ranked Npo. 5 and Red Wing ranked No. 7.

The White Hawks finished 20-7 last year and were third in the competitive Wright County Conference. They started the season 9-5, but won 11 of their last 13 games. Mound Westonka was a high scoring team last season that averaged 5.2 goals per game and scored five or more goals 13 times. They have shined in early play, outscoring their opponents 26-3 as they are off to a 5-0 start for the first time in school history.

Red Wing had an up and down season last year. The Wingers started the season 7-10-1, but finished 9-3 the rest of the regular season. They finished 4th in the Missota Conference. However, they got hot in the postseason, winning the Section 1A title and won the consolation title at the Class A state tournament games as they finished with a 16-13-1 record.

Jessica Nkhata, Mound Westonka (forward/defender)
The junior has five goals and five assists in five games this season. She two games with three points this year.

Nicole Schmamel, Red Wing (forward)
The sophomore has scored at least one goal in their first four games of the season. She has scored six goals and added seven assists.

White Hawks Win If...
They continue to score goals, despite the loss of Ms. Hockey finalist Taylor Kuehl, who had 102 points last season. Kuehl is a freshman at Ohio State this year. 

Wingers Win If...
They can shore up their defense. The Wingers have allowed 20 goals this season, despite a 3-1 record.
