Local Athletes Dodge Raindrops For Mid-Week Matchups

Wayzata, Orono and Mound-Westonka sports teams able to get in almost all contests on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Despite playing under the threat of thunderstorms on both Tuesday and Wednesday, local sports teams both managed to get in nearly the entirety of their mid-week schedules.

Wayzata Track And Field: Trojans Third, Fourth In True Team Meet

Wayzata hosted the Section 7AAA True Team track and field meet on Tuesday, with the boys finishing third with 789.5 points and the girls taking fourth with 663.5 points.

Kayla Timmerman claimed the Trojans girls highest finishes with first-place results in both the shot put and discus, with respective hurls of 38 feet, 6.5 inches and 120-08.

The Wayzata boys 4x400- and 4x800-meter relay teams both claimed first place runs as the quartet of James Smith, Brian Jarvey, Skip Johnson and Adam Moline running a time of 3 minutes, 24.51 seconds in the 4x400 and the foursome of Josh Thorson, Preston White, Jarvey and Moline posting a 7:59.04 in the 4x800.

Wayzata Baseball: Trojans 6, Hopkins 5 (9 innings)

The Wayzata baseball team improved to 4-8 overall and 3-6 in the Lake Conference with a 6-5 defeat of visiting Hopkins in nine innings on Wednesday.

Ryan Poppitz earned the win after pitching two innings in relief of starter Paul Voelker, who struck out nine batters in seven innings; Voelker also drove in two runs, with Jake Steinbach scoring twice on a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Wayzata Softball: Hopkins 10, Trojans 8

A 10-8 loss to visiting Hopkins dropped the Wayzata softball team to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in the Lake. Individual results were not available.

Wayzata Boys Tennis: Trojans Split Mid-Week Matches

The Wayzata boys tennis team defeated Edina, 4-3, on Tuesday before losing, 5-2, to Mounds View on Wednesday. Individual results were not available.

Wayzata Girls Golf: Trojans Compete In Two Meets

The Wayzata girls golf team finished fourth at the Red Wing Invitational after posting a score of 329 at Mississippi National on Tuesday; the Trojans then defeated Minnetonka, 161-190, in a Lake dual on Wednesday as Emily Erickson posted a score of 38.

Orono Softball: Spartans 4, Chaska 3

Jessica Soakne hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Orono softball team a 4-3 win over visiting Chaska in a non-conference battle on Wednesday.

The victory gave the Trojans an overall record of 11-3 on the season.

Orono Girls Golf: Spartans Third In Conference Meet

The Orono girls golf team finished third in a Wright County Conference meet with a score of 190 at Baker National on Tuesday. Individual results were not available.

Mound-Westonka Baseball: Whitehawks 1, Watertown-Mayer 0

Blake Brady earned the victory after pitching 6 2/3 innings of work, giving up five hits and five strikeouts as the Mound-Westonka baseball team defeated visiting Watertown-Mayer, 1-0, on Tuesday.

The Whitehawks improve to 9-3 this spring with the victory and remain one game behind conference-leading Dassel-Cokato in the Wright County championship chase.

Mound-Westonka Girls Golf: Whitehawks 10th In Conference Meet

The Mound-Westonka girls golf team took 10th in a Wright County meet at Baker National with a score of 242. Individual results were not available.

Mound-Westonka Softball: Watertown-Mayer 5, Whitehawks 0

In a six inning game suspended by rain, the Mound-Westonka softball team was shutout by visiting Watertown-Mayer, 5-0, on Tuesday. 

Individual statistics were not available. The Whitehawks remain in first place in the Wright County by one-half game over Orono with a record of 10-2 both overall and in conference play.
