Hockey Takes Over Lake Minnetonka this Weekend

Excelsior will be buzzing with activity as as thousands are expected to be in town for the Pond Hockey Championships and Jack Jablonski Fundraiser.

This season’s brown winter may have forced the main , but there’s still plenty to do this weekend.

The Pond Hockey North American Championship kicks off at 12 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20. Ten ice rinks between and  have been set up for the hockey games.

An update on ice conditions issued Wednesday by organizers of the Pond Hockey North American Championship indicates Excelsior Bay has about 12 inches of ice.

After games end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Maynards will host a fundraising event for The ALS Foundation in a heated tent. Commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS leads to the progressive loss of muscle function. The fundraising event will feature a live auction and a Tim Mahoney concert. Tickets are $10 and restricted to those who are 21 and older. Youngstedts and the Pond Hockey North American Championships are partnering with Maynards for the event.

Classmates of injured hockey player Jack Jablonski have organized the Jack Jablonski Junior Bronze Pond Hockey Tournament at the Bayview Event Center. The tournament and a silent auction will raise funds to support Jablonski. It is scheduled in conjunction with the Sunday Pond Hockey North American Championship games and will use five of the ice rinks on Lake Minnetonka.

Among the activities planned are ice bowling, couch rides and an outdoor barbecue.

Tickets are $10 at the door. The fundraiser will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pond Hockey North American Championship Games Schedule:

  • Jan. 20: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Jan. 21: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Jan. 22: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
