Girl's Rugby Team Torches Burnsville
Orono now preps for key match up vs. neighborhood rival Wayzata
Orono trampled Burnsville 32-7 yesterday in girl’s rugby action.
Traditionally one of the state’s perennial powerhouses, Orono is once again expected to be a force to contend with when the state tournament begins early next month.
“We have one of the strongest programs in the state, and we always have,” girl’s rugby coach Sandy Schaefbauer said. “Rugby here is big.”

Known as the “Nightmares,” the girl’s rugby program has won two state titles and finished as runners up four other times in the last eight years. This year’s team is made up of about 21 girls ages 12 through 19.
Wednesday's win was the team's forth straight, and over the last month Orono has outscored their opponents 144-19.

Orono currently sits in second place following Wednesday’s victory over Bursville and trails neighborhood rival Wayzata by just two points for the top spot in the standings.
That sets up a key match-up next week as Orono travels to Wayzata for a game that will likely dictate post-season seedings.
