Gallery: Wayzata Beats Centennial in Thrilling Overtime State Tourney Game

Trojans will advance to face No. 1 seed Hill-Murray tonight at the Xcel Energy Center after Chase Heising's game-winning goal. Opening face off is scheduled for tonight at about 8:15 p.m.

Wayzata High School's unpredictable run toward a state hockey championship will continue following the Trojans' 2-1 victory over Centennial Thursday night in St. Paul.

Thursday's first-round playoff game was tied at zero after one period of play, but Centennial managed to sneak a puck past Aaron Dingman to take the lead early in the second. It would end up being the only goal Dingman would allow and was the lone flaw during a night that saw him make more than a few sensational saves.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the third period. After missing on several good scoring chances, Jalen Wahl finally lit the lamp with just over a minute to go in regulation. For Wahl, it was his 5th goal of the post season and by far the most important.

Wayzata showed new life was as overtime began just after 11 p.m. (Yes, Friday was a normal school day), but Chase Heising sent students and parents alike home just minutes into OT.

After peppering the Centennial net with a flurry of wrist shots, Heising found a rebound about six feet in front of the net and slammed it home for the win.

Heising, a junior, had seven goals—including two game-winners—during the regular season to go along with 11 assists.

Wayzata punched their ticket to St. Paul by taking down defending champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the Section Championship. Wayzata will now have to overpower Hill-Murray, the bracket's No. 1 seed, if the Trojans want their Cinderella championship run to continue.
