Football Recaps: Orono Advances In Section Playoffs

The Orono football team defeated Park Center by a 19-14 margin on Tuesday in the Section 6AAAA quarterfinal in Orono.

The Spartans advanced to face Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the section semifinals on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Orono’s Tom Wachman was the team’s offensive weapon on Tuesday, scoring three touchdown runs of 11, 2 and 3 yards. Wachman’s two second-half scores lifted the Spartans after they trailed 14-7 at halftime.

With the win, Orono improved to 3-6 on the season. Park Center ends the year with an 0-9 record.

Mound Westonka falls to Fridley

The Mound Westonka football team lost to Fridley by a 34-14 margin on Tuesday in the Section 6AAAA quarterfinal in Fridley.

The Tigers advanced to face Spring Lake Park in the section semifinals on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

The White Hawks’ two scores came in the second quarter. Riley Williams ran in for a four-yard score to cut the lead to 20-7, and Michael Priefer connected with Trevor Blackstone for a 10-yard score to cut th lead to 27-14.

With the loss, Mound Westonka fell to 1-8 on the season. Fridley improved to a 2-7 record on the year.
