Football Friday Preview: Wayzata at Edina

The Trojans rose to the challenge in their first Lake Conference matchup, beating Minnetonka handily. They go into their second conference game confident after one of their best performances of the season.

Antonio Ford, Wayzata Running Back: Ford had a breakout game last week against the Minnetonka Skippers. He ran for 194 yards on 22 carries and made his way to the end zone twice. He showed in the win that he’s willing and capable of being the workhorse of the Wayzata rushing attack. He does a great job of getting his pads low and breaking through sloppy tackling. The Hornets are going to have to tackle well and swarm to the football if they are going to stop Ford and the Trojan rushing attack.

Nick Rallis, Edina Defensive Back: Rallis is seen as one of the state’s top, prep-football recruits. He has committed to the University of Minnesota, where his older brother plays linebacker. Rallis is physical and has the ability to disrupt an offense with his athletic ability.

The Trojans win if…

They play like last week. If they can dominate the game once again with the running game, they will be able to control the clock and keep the Edina offense off of the field. They will also need to win the field-position battle, and make the Hornets go long distances to score points.

The Hornets win if…

They play mistake-free football and find a way to stop the Wayzata rushing game. This means they will have to refrain from turning the ball over and tackle well. Wayzata will put a lot of pressure on Edina’s defensive front seven. If the Hornets’ defensive line and linebackers can play physical and move laterally with speed, they will have a chance in this game.

Edina might be most successful when executing a power-run attack. Although the Trojan defense is fast and tackles well, they lack in size. Teams have been most successful this year when going right at the Wayzata defense.

Key Injuries

Mitch Underhill, Wayzata Running back: Underhill tweaked his knee in the opening game against Prior Lake. An MRI revealed a torn ACL. He will be out for the remainder of the season.
