Area Squads Inch Closer To Postseason

Wayzata, Mound-Westonka, Orono teams beginning to see the end of the regular season in their sights.

The spring sports campaign pushed closer to its conclusion as teams from Wayzata, Orono and Mound-Westonka continued to jostle for preferred sectional seeding.

Wayzata Softball: Trojans Win Lakeville North Invitational

With a three-game sweep in the Lakeville North Panther Showcase Tournament on Saturday, the Wayzata softball team improved to 9-4 on the season.

The Trojans topped New Prague (11-1) in the opener, then bested Lakeville South (3-2) in the semifinals and won the title with a 7-3 besting of the hosts.

Stephanie Kirk leads Wayzata with a .558 batting average and three home runs this spring, while Kelsey Kleist is batting .523 with a team-high 19 runs batted in. Pitcher Jessica Williams is 9-4 this spring with 45 strikeouts and a 2.33 earned run average.

The Trojans host Hopkins at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Wayzata Baseball: Minnetonka 6, Trojans 5

The Wayzata baseball team dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the Lake Conference with a 6-5 loss at Minnetonka on Friday.

Down 4-0 in the first inning, the Trojans battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh only to fall as the Skippers scored a pair of game-winning runs in their final turn at-bat.

Jake Steinbach drove in two runs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate to lead the Wayzata offense.

The Trojans host Hopkins on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Wayzata Track And Field: Trojans Host, Win Relay Meet

The Wayzata track and field teams hosted a relay meet on Saturday, with the boys tallying 175.5 points and the girls claiming 151 points. Individual results were not available.

Wayzata Boys Tennis: Trojans Win Eau Claire Tournament

Heading across the border on Saturday, the Wayzata boys tennis team won the Eau Claire (Wis.) Tournament with wins over Woodbury (6-1), Eau Claire North (7-0) and Eau Claire Memorial (5-2).

The Trojans returned to Minnesota and lost 4-3 to Rochester Mayo on Monday. Individual statistics were not available.

Wayzata Girls Lacrosse: Minnetonka 20, Trojans 8

The Wayzata girls lacrosse team fell 20-8 at Minnetonka on Monday to fall to 2-8 overall this spring.

Individual statistics were not available. The Trojans host Maple Grove on Friday at 7 p.m.

Orono Girls Lacrosse: St. Cloud 13, Trojans 11

A 13-11 loss at St. Cloud on Monday dropped the Orono girls lacrosse team to 5-5 on the spring.

Mackenzie Slatter led the Spartans with five goals, with Eloise Hrusovsky and Shea Noerenberg scoring twice each in the loss.

Orono travels to Osseo/Park Center on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.

Orono Softball: Trojans 8, Waconia 3

The Orono softball team improved to 10-3 this year with an 8-3 win at Waconia on Monday afternoon.

Individual results were not available. The Spartans host Chaska on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Mound-Westonka Baseball: Whitehawks 8, Waconia 7

An 8-7 defeat of Waconia on Friday improved the Mound-Westonka baseball team to 7-3 on the season heading into a Tuesday game at Watertown-Mayer at 4 p.m. Individual results were not available.
