Westonka Schools Now Closed Tuesday

The cold weather prompted the district to cancel school Tuesday instead of starting late as it originally announced.

UPDATED: 4:13 p.m. Jan. 6

Citing new information the district received, Westonka schools announced that it will now be closed Tuesday because of the cold weather.

All Westonka schools, programs and activities are canceled for Tuesday—in addition to Westonka Community Education classes and activities, including Adventure Club childcare and Westonka Community Preschool.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause," read an announcement sent at 3:50 p.m. "Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe during these extreme weather conditions. We hope to be able to welcome our students back to school on Wednesday."

Westonka schools will start two hours late Tuesday due to extreme cold, the district announced.

Buses will be at their stops two hours later than normal, and there will be no morning kindergarten or preschool. Adventure Club will open at 8:30 a.m. All morning community education classes are canceled.

Unlike Monday’s closure, which was part of a statewide closure that the governor ordered, Tuesday’s late start was a district decision. Earlier in the day, the Minnesota Department of Education announced that there would not be a statewide closure.

“Governor Dayton is leaving the decision about school cancellations for Tuesday to individual school districts. We believe school superintendents are monitoring the temperatures closely and are prepared to communicate with families so they can plan accordingly,” Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius wrote in a message to school superintendents and charter school directors. “We encourage you, as always, to be mindful about the dangers of even brief exposure to these dangerously low temperatures as you make your decisions. I am grateful for your efforts on behalf of Minnesota children, not only during this challenging week, but every day.”

Forecasters predict Tuesday’s high will be near 0 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chill values as low as -37 degrees.
