Wayzata School Board Business: Teacher Recognition, Open Enrollment and Finances

During its March 11 regular meeting, the school board of Wayzata Public Schools conducted the following business.

From the Wayzata School District:

The board received student curriculum presentations fifth grade students at Oakwood Elementary School and fourth and fifth grade students at Greenwood Elementary School.

The board recognized East Middle School teachers Rachel Marcouiller and Nicole Johnson as the March 2013 Wayzata Public Schools Employees of the Month.

The board recognized WHS teacher Mike Doyle for being named a Minnesota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Teacher of the Year.

The board recognized WHS teacher Sheila Peterson for being named a 2012-13 Debate Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association.

The board recognized winners of the 2013 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards.

WHS senior and student council vice president Mitch Condon gave a brief update to the board concerning activities at the high school since the February 11, 2013 regular meeting.

The board received and reviewed the student activity fund report of January 31, 2013 and the monthly financial reports details fund and budget status data as of January 31, 2013 as presented by Executive Director of Finance and Business Jim Westrum.

The board received and approved the 2013-14 Integration Budget as presented by Executive Director of Finance and Business Jim Westrum.

The board received and approved the recommendation from Executive Director of Finance and Business Jim Westrum to open enrollment for 2013-14 to accept kindergarten siblings into the district when an older sibling is currently attending Wayzata Public Schools. Kindergarten students will be assigned to an elementary school that has capacity and older siblings may be considered for transfer to the same school if desired by open enrollment family.

The board received and approved a recommendation from Executive Director of Finance and Business Jim Westrum to approve the purchase agreement by and between Elm Creek Golf Course, Inc., a Minnesota Corporation located at 18940 State Highway 55, Plymouth MN 55446, and Independent School District 284 to purchase approximately 37 acres of land located adjacent to Wayzata High School to facilitate future high school projects identified through the district’s Comprehensive Facility Condition Assessment Study.

The board received an approved a recommendation from Executive Director of Finance and Business Jim Westrum to approve the purchase agreement by and between Independent School District 284 and GWS Land Development of Plymouth, LLC. for the sale of approximately 19 acres of land owned by Wayzata Public Schools located on County Road 47.

The board received and approved a recommendation from Executive Director of Finance and Business Jim Westrum to approve the third party agreement by and between Independent School District 284 and GWS Land Development of Plymouth, LLC.

The board received and approved a recommendation of authorization of health and hospitalization insurance rates for 2013-14 and the authorization of dental insurance rates for 2013-14.

During the audience opportunity to address the board, members of the board were addressed by district parent Derek Diesen regarding the district’s curriculum for reading.
