Wayzata QB Nick Martin Says He's Headed to St. John's

High school standout may also compete for the Johnnies' punter job.

Nick Martin is headed to Collegeville to play football in the fall.

"I have decided that I will attend St. Johns University next year," Martin wrote on Facebook yesterday evening. "I just want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. Go Johnnies!"

Dozens of friends responded with messages of congratulations, support and a pinch of teasing.

In his senior season Martin quarterbacked football team to the program's second state title game in as many years. The Trojans lost to Eden Prairie in the 2011 Prep Bowl, putting a disappointing end to Wayzata's otherwise perfect season.

Martin threw for more than 1,600 yards last fall, including 199 against traditional powerhouse Cretin-Durham Hall in the state semi-finals. He ended his senior season with 23 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He was also the team's punter and as a freshman may compete for that job in college.
