Wayzata Baseball Star Signs With University of Minnesota Duluth

Jake Steinbach will join his brother and sister at UMD next fall.

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) baseball team signed a recruit from Wayzata during the early signing period this year, snagging senior Jake Steinbach to add to its 2013 class.

The Bulldogs also inked Nick Omodt out of Edina High School.

“This is going to be a larger recruiting class, so this gets us off on the right foot,” head UMD baseball coach Bob Rients said. “Signing both players begins to address our need to score runs. These two are both talented offensively, and have a mental toughness that’s going to be a benefit when they get to this level."

Coach Rients went on to say UMD is excited to work with Stienbach and "make them the same sort of go-to players here that they’ve become at the high school level.”

Steinbach, a senior at Wayzata, started his past two seasons with the Trojans, playing a mixture of positions including catcher, second base and outfield. He is the son of former Minnesota Twins catcher Terry Steinbach. The elder Steinbach is now an assistant coach for Wayzata, which also features two sons and two grandsons of former major leaguers.
