Orono boys basketball team wins state championship.

Orono's fifth-grade boy's basketball team won the Class 5AAAAAA state championship this past weekend.

Despite being the smallest school in the field, Orono fought its way to victory against some of the larger schools in the state.

Orono began the tournament with a 37-31 victory over East Ridge and followed that with a commanding 46-31 victory over Prior Lake.

In the semi finals Orono faced a strong Hopkins team and rallied back from a 10-point deficit to win the game 39-34.

In the finals Orono was pitted against top seed Eden Prairie. Orono played one of its best games of the season jumping out to a 25-9 lead before closing out with a 35-22 victory.

This championship represents a milestone for Orono basketball as no other Orono fifth-grade team has won a state title at this level of competition.
