Orono Superintendent: Traffic Conditions Along Old Crystal Bay Road 'Very Concerning'

Letter sent to parents and community members details recent meeting between police and school officials.

by Dr. Karen Orcutt, Superintendent of Orono Schools

Now that the weather is nicer and our schedules are busier, traffic conditions along Old Crystal Bay Road have become very concerning. Our greatest concern is students crossing the street between the middle school and high school at dismissal time.

Because the Orono Police Department is also concerned with what they are seeing, we met recently to address the issue. We are very fortunate to have an ongoing relationship with the department so we can address issues such as this one proactively.

In addition to cooperating with the police, we are working with our own staff and First Student Transportation (our bus company) to improve safety in the areas over which we have control. We are asking for your help in three areas:

  1. Reduce traffic congestion by having your student(s) take advantage of our free transportation.
  2. Principals in all schools are talking with students about the seriousness of this problem. We ask that you reinforce our efforts. For example, please don't have students cross the street to catch a ride where it might be less congested.
  3. Any time you are driving on campus, please be extra vigilant.

Thank you for supporting us in promoting a safe campus. We are looking forward to a productive and incident-free end of the school year.
