Feed My Starving Children MobilePack Coming to Mound Westonka High School

How you can participate in the community event to fight worldwide hunger.

About 1,000 people are fed every day at Mound Westonka High School. But during two days the first weekend in November, MWHS hopes to provide 100,000 meals to children in Haiti as a MobilePack site for Feed My Starving Children (FMSC).

The Lake Minnetonka Area MobilePack is scheduled to be set up in the high school cafeteria Nov. 2 and 3. The high school administration and several MWHS student organizations are working with parent Tammi Colianni and FMSC to organize the MobilePack, which will be open to the entire community.

In order to make the MobilePack a reality, it is necessary to recruit volunteers and to raise the money needed to produce the meals—$22,000.

With a MobilePack, Feed My Starving Children brings the raw ingredients, equipment and trained staff, and the sponsoring organization provides the funds and “people power.” As the time of the event nears, individuals (age 5 and up) and groups will be able to sign up online for a two-hour shift to help pack meals.

However, the most immediate need is fundraising. To raise the money needed for the MobilePack, community organizers are selling T-shirts for $15.00. Each T-shirt sale provides 45 meals for children in need. To order a T-shirt, contact Colianni at tcolianni@aol.com or (952) 221-5711.

Also, the Navarre Culver’s (3340 Shoreline Drive) is hosting a fundraiser for the event from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22. The restaurant will be donating a portion of its proceeds—dine-in, carry-out and drive-through—to the MobilePack.

Colianni also hopes to attract community and local business contributions to meet the fundraising goal.

“We are still in need of financial supporters to make the MobilePack happen,” Colianni said. “We ask that people spread the word to individuals, businesses, churches and organizations in the area.”

Where Will the Food Go?
According to Feed My Starving Children, nearly 18,000 children die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. The community packs prepared at MWHS will be shipped to the organization Love a Child in Haiti.

Love a Child uses FMSC food to operate an orphanage; 14 schools; the Jesus Healing Center malnourishment clinic; Miracle Village, a “city” of 500 new homes for victims of the 2010 earthquake; and a food distribution warehouse that supplies 42 other missions and charities all across Haiti.

Feed My Starving Children serves the hungry in nearly 70 countries around the world. The dry, nonperishable meals packed by volunteers, whether at FMSC locations or MobilePack sites, have been designed by food scientists to reverse and prevent malnutrition. Feed My Starving Children provides the meals free to clinics, schools, orphanages and refugee programs around the world.
