Everything You Need to Know Before School Starts in Orono

Students in Orono Schools return Tuesday, Sept. 6. Find out when your child's class assignment and schedule will arrive.

An estimated 2,750 students are expected to fill the classrooms of Orono Schools when classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 4, for students in grades 1-12 and Wednesday, Sept. 5, for full-day and half-day kindergarten students.

Registration
New families living within district boundaries should begin the registration process by calling the District Office at 952/449-8300.  Families living in other districts that wish to enroll their student(s) in Orono should call 952/449-8308.

Attendance Hours
The attendance hours for each school are:

  • Orono (grades K-2) – 9:10 a.m.-3:40 p.m.
  • Orono Intermediate School (grades 3-5) – 9:10 a.m.-3:40 p.m.
  • Orono Middle School (grades 6-8) – 8 a.m.-2:40 p.m.
  • Orono High School (grades 9-12) – 7:50 a.m.-2:30 p.m.


Class Assignments/Schedules (elementary and Intermediate)
Class assignments for elementary and intermediate students are expected to be mailed Aug. 23.

Middle School
Sixth-graders and new seventh and eighth-graders receive their schedules, locker numbers and combinations at the Orono Middle School orientation. It will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23.

Families of returning sevent- and eighth-graders will be able to access their schedules online beginning Friday, Aug. 24, through SchoolView. Locker numbers and combinations will also be available there.

High School
Orono High School ninth-graders and new students will receive their schedules and locker assignments during Freshman Orientation. It will be held from 7:10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30. Parent activities will conclude about 9 a.m. that morning.

Schedules and locker assignments for seniors, juniors and sophomores will be mailed during the week of Aug. 22.

School Supplies
Links to school supply lists for elementary, intermediate and middle school students are on listed on school homepages.  They can be accessed from the district web site:  www.orono.k12.mn.us .

School Lunches

School lunch prices this year are:  $2.30 for all-day kindergarten and grades 1-5; $2.40 for grades 6-8; $2.55 for grades 9-12; and $3.30 for adults.

Information about free and reduced-price lunches has been mailed to every household in the district with school-age children.  An application form is also available on the district web site.  For information about computerized lunch accounts, please visit www.mealpayplus.com or call Susan Rae at 952/449-8438.

Transportation
All resident students are eligible for free bus transportation. Each resident family will be mailed a first-class letter with transportation information for their student(s) the week of August 20. For more information, please call First Student Transportation at 952-475-0038.

High School Athletics
All fall sports begin practices begin Monday, August 13. Families must complete a registration packet before students are allowed to participate in practices. Registration packets are available in the High School office.

Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Required forms include registration card, Minnesota State High School League eligibility form, proof of valid physical within the last three years and parent insurance waiver.  

The participation fee is $340 for all sports except football, which is $355.

School Calendars
The district’s 201-13 school calendar will be available to families at no charge this year. Parents will be able to pick up calendars in school offices, beginning the week of August 27.  They will also be available at Curriculum Nights and Back-to-School Night.

  • Thursday, August 30 – Ninth-grade and new student orientation, 7:10-11:30 a.m., Orono High School
  • Friday, August 31 – Grades 1-5 open house, 8-9 a.m., Orono Schumann Elementary and Orono Intermediate School
  • Thursday, September 6 – Curriculum Night, 6:30 p.m., Orono Middle School
  • Monday, September 10  – Back-to-School Night, 7 p.m., Orono High School
  • Thursday, September 13 – Curriculum Night, 6:30 p.m., Orono Schumann Elementary
  • Thursday, September 20 – Curriculum Night, 6:30 p.m., Orono Intermediate School
