Emily Halvarson is Mound Westonka High School's 2012 Athena Award winner. Candidates for this “outstanding female athlete” award must demonstrate excellence in individual or group sports.

Halvarson will represent MWHS at the 40th Annual Athena Awards Luncheon, taking place this year May 4 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. She will be one of 53 outstanding senior women to be honored from public and private high schools in the greater Minneapolis area.

Emily participated in soccer, hockey, track and lacrosse during her high school year. In soccer, she is a three-year letter winner, earning two time All-Conference honors, All-State Honorable Mention, two team MVP awards and was a captain during her senior senior. She also earned the Golden Boot Award. She was part of the conference championship team two years and the section runner-up team her senior year, during which she was also a captain. She was named Hardest Worker two years.

Halvarson lettered in track one year and is a starter this spring in her first season on the lacrosse team.

In addition to sports, Emily is a member of DECA and the Link Crew. She also participated in the WSI Summer Institute—Peru, an experience which she says interested her in future travel abroad.

One of Emily’s best memories of her high school career was the hockey team making it to the section finals for the first time. Another was scoring a hat trick, including the winning goal, when the White Hawks beat Red Wing in overtime this season.

Emily plans to attend the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, where she plans to major in business or marketing and hopes to play hockey as well.

She is the daughter of Rich and Deann Halvarson of Mound.
