Storm Aftermath: Power Returns to Wayzata as Cleanup Continues

The City Council, in an emergency meeting on Monday, authorized the city to assist property owners with disposal of downed trees, brush and other tree debris.

Intense wind and rain blew through the Twin Cities last Friday, uprooting trees and knocking out power for more than 600,000 Xcel Energy customers.

Wayzata Public Works responded shortly after the stormon Friday evening, working throughout the weekend. All 24 city lift stations were out of power. Both water plants were running on emergency generator power. To prevent sewer backups, city crews were moving from lift station to lift station, running generators at all hours of the day.

The City Council, in an emergency meeting on Monday, authorized the city to assist property owners with disposal of downed trees, brush and other tree debris. As a result, Wayzata Public Works developed a two-phase storm response plan.

Phase I began Monday, June 24. By Thursday evening, the city and its contractors had visited every street in Wayzata to pick up storm debris. Pick-up will continue into the week of July 1 to allow residents time to remove debris from their yards. Crews will work until the evening of Friday, June 28 and continue the cleanup efforts again on Monday, July 1. The goal is to visit all of the streets in Wayzata by the end of Wednesday, July 3, weather permitting. After all city streets have been visited, Phase I will end.

In Phase II,  the city will pick-up debris from residential locations when the residents call public works with a pickup location. Residents that bring materials to the curbside after their street was visited during Phase I may call Wayzata Public Works at 952-404-5360 to notify them that additional trees and or brush has been brought to the curbside. Residents may also bring their debris to the City of Plymouth’s drop-off site. The City of Wayzata's complementary storm debris pick-up program will end onJuly 12.

If you have any questions about the tree and brush curbside program, please call Wayzata Public Works at952-404-5360
