Update: New Excelsior Library Breaks Ground Next Week

Excelsior's new library will have a 24/7 exterior book return, off-street paved parking, outdoor sitting areas and energy-efficient features.

Construction of a new library in Excelsior will begin next week with a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 12.

The new library will replace the existing one that has served area residents since 1965. The new building will nearly double the public space and include a multi-purpose room for library programs and community meetings, a refreshed collection and comfortable reading areas and spaces for all.

The Excelsior branch of Hennepin County’s library system served 26,500 patrons in 2011 and circulated more than 206,000 items.

The new 7,200-gross-square-foot library will include specific areas designed for teens, children and families—including collaborative study space for teens and an interactive, early-literacy space for children and families to use together. A multi-purpose room will provide space for library programs and community meetings.
