Erik Paulsen: 'No American Should Have Right to Free Speech Threatened by IRS'

The congressman for Minnesota's Third District expressed outrage at the IRS scandal on the Hugh Hewitt show.

U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN) issued a timely Facebook posting Monday about the tornadoes in Oklahoma:

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Oklahoma and those affected by today’s devastation. Please stay safe.

Paulsen held a "Congress on Your Corner" Monday at the Cub Foods store in Maple Grove. (See the Storify above or at Storify.com.)

IRS Scandal
Paulsen appeared on the Hugh Hewitt Show last week to discuss the IRS targeting of groups based on political affiliation (listen to the program here). Paulsen summarized his position at his blog:

It is unconscionable that the IRS deliberately targeted individuals based on their political beliefs. Absolutely no one should come under extra scrutiny from the IRS because of their political affiliation. It’s simply un-American.

Beginning in June of 2011, the Ways and Means Committee has repeatedly asked the IRS for verification on whether or not it targeted groups based on their political views. On multiple occasions—including a March 2012 Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee hearing that I was a part of—the IRS explicitly denied such activities. Simply put, this type of activity must not be tolerated, and I expect those who authorized this outrageous activity to be held accountable.

No American, regardless of their political ideology, should have their right to free speech threatened by the IRS. I'm looking forward to joining my colleagues to examine this issue and take steps to protect American taxpayers.

The IRS has a duty to taxpayers to determine if an organization deserves tax free status as a 501c organization. Many of these organizations are fronts for political groups seeking to elect candidates to political office while hiding the identity of their contributors. Taxpayers should not have to subsidize these covert political action commitees.

So BarkingDog. Are you saying it is fine and dandy that the IRS is illegally targeting Conservative groups such as the Tea Party? You DON'T have a problem with the Obama Administration sending out marching orders to squash LEGAL political groups such as the Tea Party?

Jonathan hits his putts for the Dough...Jonathan....Lois Lerner is invoking her Fifth Amendment rights. Seems, like some don't like the 1st or 2nd Amendments...but the 5th...that's another thing.

The IRS was asking what books people were reading, It wasn't just the IRS either they were investigated by OSHA. They also used resources to investigate the people applying for tax exemption status that should have been used to investigate the Boston bombers. This whole thing has made America less safe.

Rep. Bachmann is indeed correct when she states that Obama and the Democrats will attempt to deny healthcare to Tea Party members and conservatives under Obamacare. Some people thought such an idea was preposterous. But we have seen the extent of the nefarious schemes of this administration to take away our rights. The IRS scandal, which looks as if it will lead to President Obama's impeachment, is just another example. I urge Rep. Paulsen to continue to be in the forefront of safeguarding our liberties, which are under assault from liberals and Democrats.
