Tuesday Evening Fire Leaves Mound Couple Wondering Where They'll Sleep

Neighbors reported smoke coming from a second floor eave around 7 p.m.

Brandy Brannon isn’t sure where she and her husband will be sleeping tonight, but she knows it won’t be at the couple’s townhome on Kildare Drive.

Firefighters were dispatched to the couple’s Mound residence around 7 p.m. Tuesday evening after Brannon called to report a strong smell of what she described as burning plastic.

Neighbors also reported smoke coming from a second floor eave.

Arriving engines quickly extinguished what is described as a smoky, smoldering hot spot that damaged the kitchen ceiling and attic.

“The firefighters had to tear down the kitchen ceiling to get to the insulation,” Brannon said.

Brannon went on to say she heard popping sounds coming from a wall earlier Tuesday and reported a loss of power to her landlord. A maintenance technician inspected the home but found nothing abnormal. Brannon was told her landlord was set to call an electrician in the morning.

Firefighters didn’t need much water, so collateral damage to the home was minimal. The scene was cleared by 8:30 p.m.

Gas and power to the building was turned off in order to tamp down the smolders, and Brannon said she wasn’t sure exactly where she and her husband would sleep Tuesday night.

“I don’t have anywhere to go—I still have to figure that part out,” Brannon said. “My husband’s family is from Wisconsin and South Dakota, and I’m from California so we don’t have any close family.”
