Updated: Police Release Details of School Bus and Car Accident in Shorewood

Police said the car involved in the collision burst into flames.

A school bus traveling west on Smithtown Road in  was involved in a crash with a car traveling east on Smithtown Road on the morning of Mar. 1.

According to the South Lake Minnetonka Police incident report, the accident occurred as a vehicle made a left turn into a driveway. The bus driver was unable to stop the bus as it approached the turning vehicle. The bus swerved into the east-bound lane and struck another vehicle head on.

There were no children on the bus at the time of the accident.

The bus was a First Student bus that services the Minnetonka Public School District, according to Janet Swiecichowski, executive director of communications with the Minnetonka Public School District.

Police cited the school bus driver for careless driving.

Both the driver and child of the car that collided with the school bus were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, according to Excelsior Fire District Chief Scott Gerber. Their names have not yet been released.

At 8:25 Thursday, a passenger vehicle and school bus collided as they traveled in opposite directions in the 25000 block of Smithtown Road in . According to the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department, the passenger vehicle caught on fire. A child who was in the vehicle was not injured, but the driver was taken to a hospital.

The Minnetonka Public School District bus was not transporting any children at the time of the crash. It is not yet known if the bus driver received any injuries, but he was not taken to a hospital, as well.

The Excelsior Fire District was also on the scene. Patch contacted the Excelsior Fire District Chief, but was unable to reach him.
