UPDATE: School Bus Incident Slows Traffic on Highway 7 Due to Medical Emergency

Traffic was backed up going both directions Monday afternoon on Highway 7.

The driver of a First Student bus had a medical emergency on the frontage road near Highway 7 and Vine Hill Road on the Minnetonka/Shorewood border just after 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14.

As officials assisted, traffic was backed up going both directions on Highway 7. The frontage road west of Vine Hill Road near the park and ride was closed.

No students were on the bus at the time of the incident.

The bus driver had just finished a route from Excelsior Elementary and was on his way to Groveland Elementary when the incident happened, according to First Student. First Student, Minnetonka School District's contracted transportation, dispatched another bus to transport the Groveland students home.

At the time of the incident, an adult working as a bus monitor was able to take control of the steering wheel and bring the bus to a safe stop on the frontage road. There was no damage to the bus or any other vehicles.

The driver, a 60-year-old male, suffered a mild stroke and is expected to make a full recovery.

The bus driver joined First Student in 2010 and has a clean driving record, the bus company said.

The safety and security of the students transported each day is First Student's core value. Prior to transporting any students, all First Student drivers and bus monitors are required to undergo many hours of training, which includes topics such as remaining calm in an emergency.
