Mound Man Arrested for Fifth DWI in 10 Months, Tries to Outrun Orono Cops

Police recognized David Anderson from a welfare check performed a few days prior, during which the criminal complaint says cops found him heavily intoxicated. Last week he tried to flee Orono police after a traffic stop on Shoreline Drive.

A 42-year-old Mound man was arrested last week and for the fifth time in less than a year has been charged with DUI.

A motorist on Shoreline Drive called police just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, to report that a vehicle was swerving and operating erratically. A nearby squad responded to the call and found a car driven by a man later identified as David Anderson parked near the intersection of Shoreline Drive and Spates Avenue.

The criminal complaint against Anderson, signed by investigator Dan Niccum of the Orono Police Department, alleges officers immediately detected the strong odor of alcohol during initial conversations with Anderson. A bottle of alcohol was observed on the passenger side floorboard, and the complaint says Anderson's speech was noticibly slurred.

Police recognized Anderson from a welfare check performed a few days prior, during which the complaint says cops found him heavily intoxicated.

Asked to produce his driver's license, Anderson began searching for his wallet but soon began "maneuvering the gear shift." Anderson tried to flee the scene, driving across the lawn of a nearby residence and into a residential driveway.

A police officer then managed to climb through a rear window and disengage the ignition.

Anderson was arrested and taken to the Orono Police Station. He refused breath, urine and blood tests and has been charged by the Hennepin County Attorney with first-degree driving while impaired—a felony that could carry between three and seven years in prison.

Anderson has four prior DUI convictions—all coming in 2012. He was arrested for DUI on both April 12 and April 13 last year, as well as May 3 and July 4. He also was arrested and convicted for two DUI offenses in the late 1990s.
