Minnetrista Police Cuff Woman Attempting to Cash Fake Payroll Check from City of Victoria

Bank employees faxed a copy of the $1,982.60 check to the City of Victoria and were told the check had not been issued by the city. Additionally, the check was "visibly different from the checks issued by the city," according to the complaint.

Minnetrista police arrested a 48-year-old woman last Thursday, March 28, after being called to the Klein Bank in St. Bonifacius on a report of attempted check forgery in progress.

Arriving officers were told by bank employees that a woman identified as Susan Scharpen of St. Paul was attempting to cash a check from the City of Victoria for $1,982.60. According to the criminal complaint filed Tuesday and signed by Craig Squires of the Minnetrista Police Department, Scharpen told bank tellers the check was a payroll payment and needed to be cashed.

Police confirmed Scharpen did not work for the city and placed her under arrest. Prosecutors have formally charged her with one count of offering a forged check, a felony.

Scharpen remained in custody as of this posting.
