Excelsior Man Charged with Resisting Arrest, Assaulting Officer

Police say Kyle Robert Trebesch fled from an Excelsior police officer last week and then smashed his elbow into her face when she caught up to him.

An Excelsior man has been charged with fleeing from a police officer when she tried to arrest him and smashing his elbow into her face.

Kyle Robert Trebesch, 21, is charged with two gross misdemeanors in the May 24 incident—obstructing the legal process and fourth-degree assault, each of which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

Trebesch is also charged with fleeing a peace officer on foot, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Trebesch remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $12,000 bond. He is also being held on charges in Wright County  and a felony charge of fleeing police in Edina. He is scheduled to make a first appearance on the latest charges today in Hennepin County District Court.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by Excelsior Police Detective Mike O’Keefe, an Excelsior police officer learned just before midnight May 24 that Trebesch—who was being sought on the Edina felony warrant and who had fled several days earlier when the same officer tried to arrest him—was at Haskell’s Bar in Excelsior.

The officer went to the bar and spotted Trebesch. She approached him and told him he was under arrest, and Trebesch pulled away from her and fled.

The officer chased Trebesch and caught up to him in the bar’s entryway, where he elbowed her in the face, hitting her in the nose and mouth, according to the complaint.

A second officer arrived and saw the officer pursuing Trebesch. He pulled his service pistol and ordered Trebesch to the ground, but Trebesch ignored the order, the complaint says.

The second officer said he saw Trebesch smash his elbow into the first officer’s face. The two officers were able to restrain Trebesch, but he continued to fight their attempts to handcuff him, according to the complaint.
