Crime Alert Issued for Northern Lake Minnetonka Communities

Do not open your door to strangers, if you do speak with someone at your door ask for permit or company issued identification.

The cities of Maple Plain and Independence have been besieged with solicitor’s the last couple of weeks. On Monday, July 29, the solicitors were falsely telling citizens they had a permit from the Maple Plain or Independence to solicit.

They were also claiming to be soliciting for a charitable organization which was also was false. West Hennepin Public Safety arrested one of the solicitor’s on warrants and was transported to Hennepin County Jail. Three other solicitors were cited for soliciting without a permit. Both the cities of Maple Plain and Independence require solicitor’s to obtain a permit.

To obtain a permit West Hennepin Public Safety does a background on each solicitor to ensure proper identity and no criminal background.

Director Ray McCoy advises “Do not open your door to strangers, if you do speak with someone at your door ask for permit or company issued identification. Call 911 and report that you have solicitors at your residence and a West Hennepin officer will respond and check to see if they are legitimate.”
