Manimony

"Manimony" is the new trend.

According to Webster Dictionary, alimony is defined as "an allowance made to one spouse by the other for support pending or after legal separation or divorce."  Alimony is otherwise known as spousal maintenance.

Spousal maintenance is based on the need of one spouse and the ability to pay of the other. But, the new trend is "manimony," women paying men spousal maintenance.

In my practice over the years I have seen numerous women that have struggled to get spousal maintenance to help meet their basic expenses when they stayed at home for years watching kids and taking care of the home. Now the trend is men under earning and expecting spousal maintenance. In my opinion, if someone stays at home and takes care of the home and kids and has years of no money going to retirement accounts or building up earning potential and income, this person (male or female) could have the potential to receive spousal maintenance.

Men and women should be subject to the same laws.

I'm all for equality. But, receiving spousal maintenance or asking for it just because you think you deserve it, doesn't mean you should or could necessarily receive spousal maintenance. If you are going through the divorce process and are trying to figure out how much you could receive or pay in spousal maintenance, I can help you figure that amount out.
