Suburban Kickstarters: You Can Make a Restaurant and Record Happen

The Suburban sports bar in Excelsior and The Suburbs band ask for a helping hand.

Two local efforts that celebrate their suburban roots in their very names are using the Kickstarter method of raising money.

The Suburban
The Berset family, who plan to open a new restaurant in the former Automated Building Components building at 352 Third St. in Excelsior, have raised nearly $6,000 toward their goal of $25,000:

"The Suburban is an upscale sports bar that specializes in gourmet burgers, pizzas and hotdogs. It is a place for friends to gather for a night on the town, families to come celebrate winning a little league game, and foodies to indulge in their deepest desires. The meaning behind our name comes from our goal of taking trendy, urban cuisine and substituting it into a suburban neighborhood. Built in an old warehouse, The Suburban will provide an industrial atmosphere combined with the comforts of your favorite foods to create Excelsior’s new favorite hangout."

Their Kickstarter deadline is Aug. 17 and they hope to open The Suburban's doors by Nov. 1, 2013.

The Suburbs
The Twin Cities' western suburbs spawned the band The Suburbs in 1977 and now they're back to make their first record in 27 years, to be called Si Sauvage. Late Wednesday, they reached their $65,000 goal and are trying to reach a cool 1,000 backers (the total was 919 Thursday afternoon) by Friday morning.

Band leader Chan Poling told MPR Thursday:

"The way I look at it is, you can pre-order the record. So you give $10 and we give you a download. You give us $25 we give you the physical CD and a little booklet. You give us more money, we give you T-shirts. Then there’s all sorts of experiences — like for $10,000 you can get a concert in your house. Two people have bought those already."
