Watershed District Conducts Controlled Wetland Burn

Periodical burns are designed to maintain ecological balance.

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District conducted a wetland burn last Wednesday in Independence on County Road 6 and County Road 19.

The watershed district burns the wetland every few years to get rid of invasive plants and the thatch layer. This makes it easier for native plants, which are more used to fire, to thrive and maintain the wetland’s fragile ecological balance.
