Shorewood College Student Ships Off to China

Study being conducted by Lawrence University will explore China's long-term development.

Shorewood native India Waller, daughter of Todd and Chris Waller, is participating in a 19-day study tour in China. She is a 2010 graduate of .

A sophomore at Lawrence University, Waller left for China on Nov. 29 and will return Dec. 17. She is one of 13 students selected for the university's "Sustainable China: Integrating Culture, Conservation and Commerce" program.

During the trip, Waller and others are investigating ways China is attempting to sustain its incredible economic growth without destroying its cultural history or its limited natural resources. Waller is traveling to both rural and urban sites for observation and discussion.

Led by four Lawrence University faculty members, the trip includes stops in the coastal cities of Hong Kong and nearby Shenzhen, Guiyang in Guizhou Province and Kunming and Dali in Yunnan Province.

During the visit, Waller will make presentations in Hong Kong and Guiyang on a water-related problem in China she researched while on the trip.

The study tour is supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation that provides Lawrence students opportunities to examine, through a multi-disciplinary approach, the critical issues of economic growth, environmental sustainability and a shifting cultural landscape facing China.
