Nominees sought for Minnesota Deer Hunter Ethics Award

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, Jan. 20.

Deer hunters are encouraged to share stories of exemplary behavior by nominating hunters for the 19th Annual Minnesota Deer Hunter Ethics Award.

The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) and Turn In Poachers (TIP), honors a deer hunter who has exhibited conduct during the 2011 season that can serve as a positive example to all hunters.

Awards for youth and adult divisions will be presented to the selected recipients at an upcoming MDHA event held in their vicinity.

"The MDHA is pleased to again co-sponsor this award," said Mark Johnson, MDHA executive director. "The award highlights ethical behavior and encourages all hunters to care more about our hunting heritage, fairness and the image hunters portray."

Mike Kurre, DNR Mentoring Program coordinator, said, “Honoring a youth and adult who exemplify the positive aspects of hunting sets a great example of how we all need to live as stewards of the outdoors.”

Douglas Bermel, TIP Board president, agreed.

"This award isn’t just about obeying the laws. It’s about going above and beyond, and being honored for it. TIP is proud to be a part of the Deer Hunter Ethics Awards program.”

Anyone may nominate a hunter by writing a letter or email explaining the actions of the nominee and why that person is worthy of this recognition. Both youth and adults are eligible, but nominees must be Minnesota residents. The incidents for which hunters are nominated must have occurred during any of the 2011 archery, firearm or muzzleloader deer hunting seasons in Minnesota.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, Jan. 20. Nomination letters should be sent to: Ethical Hunter Award, MDHA, 460 Peterson Road, Grand Rapids, MN 55744-8413, or faxed to 218-327-1349. Send email nominations to kimhanson@mndeerhunters.com.
