TONIGHT: Authors Sign New Book Honoring Voyageurs National Park

The Freshwater Society will host a book signing event for Voyageur Skies on Oct. 12.

Don Breneman and Mark Seeley, authors of a new book about Voyageurs National Park, will be featured at a book signing event at the Gray Freshwater Center on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Located in northern Minnesota, Voyageurs National Park became a national park in 1975 and is America’s only water-based national park. Entitled Voyageur Skies, the book includes 120 photos of the lakes and forests in the park taken during spring, summer, fall and winter.

Breneman is a retired University of Minnesota Extension photographer. The book includes his written account of the park’s history—from the native peoples who first populated the area, to the fur traders, gold miners, timber crews and commercial fishermen who lived and worked there in later decades.

Seeley contributes a season-by-season exploration of the park’s weather and climate trends. A professor in the University of Minnesota's Department of Soil, Water, and Climate, Seeley is also a weekly commentator on Minnesota Public Radio.

Freshwater Society President Gene Merriam wrote the forward in Voyageur Skies. The 140-page book is published by the Afton Historical Society Press.

The book signing, which is free and open to the public, takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Gray Freshwater Center.

The Freshwater Society is a Minnesota non-profit organization, based in Excelsior. For more than 40 years, it has educated and inspired people to value, conserve and protect water resources.
