PFC Skyler Houtman, a 2005 graduate of Mound Westonka High School, deployed to Afghanistan today with the U.S. Army. Houtman is a Cavalry Scout.
"He is trained as a Cavalry Scout, known as the eyes and ears of the Army, but I understand with the situation there these days his role will be more security detail than 'scouting' intel," Houtman's mother, Kristine, said.
Her son's deployment is scheduled to last nine months
"He’s glad his leave will come when there’s plenty of fun on Lake Minnetonka next summer," she said.
Skyler has two sisters: Katie Jo (30) and Justine (23). Justine attended the University of North Dakota and is a helicopter instructor. She recently married an Army 2nd lieutenant and military helicopter pilot. He will complete his training in November on the Apache Longbow and also deploy to Afghanistan in January.
Kristine Houtman has dedicated her fifth book entitled "Born to be Wild" and coming out Nov. 1 to her son. The fictional family series includes many of Skyler's adventures growing up on Lake Minnetonka.
Skyler Houtman turned 15 on 9/11 back in 2001.
"I think that impacted him and his decision to join the military," his mother said.
The Houtmans have lived in Orono on Lake Minnetonka for nearly two decades and have been active in a variety of community groups over the years.
