Lake Minnetonka Cyclists Compete in 2012 Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival

The Lake Minnetonka area was well represented at the 30th Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival—something like the Boston Marathon for Midwest bicyclists—over the weekend in Wisconsin.

The race started with 27 riders in 1983. This year, 1,850 riders rode the 40 miles to finish at Telemark Resort. Another 900 riders were to start concurrently in downtown Cable in the 16-mile "Short & Fat" and also finished at Telemark.

Steve Jones of Tonka Bay had the best time among local racers, finishing 185th overall with a time of 2:29:55.5. He averaged a pace of 16.3 mph.

Mike Anderson of Alpena, MI, won this year's race with a time of 02:00:51.5.

• Terri Beard, 51, of Excelsior finished 17th in the 50-54 age group with a time of 04:32:12.3.
